For decades, the A40 between Witney and Eynsham has been one of Oxfordshire's worst congestion hotspots, causing daily frustration for commuters, families and businesses. While some improvements have been delivered in recent years, they were always intended to form part of a wider package that included completing the dual carriageway between Witney and Eynsham.
That long-term vision has now been abandoned by Oxfordshire County Council's Liberal Democrat administration.
At the very time thousands of new homes are being planned across West Oxfordshire, the council has chosen to scrap the one scheme that offered the greatest opportunity to improve capacity on one of the county's busiest roads. Instead, residents face the prospect of increasing congestion, longer journey times and growing pressure on local communities.
That's why I've launched the Bring Back the A40 Dual Carriageway Upgrades campaign.
The campaign is calling on Oxfordshire County Council to reverse its decision, reinstate the dual carriageway plans, and put infrastructure first. It will bring together residents, businesses, parish councils and commuters who believe Oxfordshire deserves a transport network that is fit for the future.
This is about more than just a road. It's about supporting local jobs, attracting investment, ensuring new housing is matched by the infrastructure it needs, reducing congestion through towns and villages, and giving people more reliable journeys every day.
This campaign will highlight the evidence, share the experiences of those affected by congestion and build support across West Oxfordshire to send a clear message to the County Council: it's time to bring back the A40 dual carriageway.
