Oxfordshire County Council has today released its public consultation on the OxRail2024 Plan for Rail, setting out proposals to improve rail services across the county and better connect communities to jobs, education, and leisure.

The plan outlines ambitions for investment in Oxfordshire’s rail network, including long-awaited improvements to the Cotswold Line, a vital link between Oxford, the Midlands, and the South West. One of the key proposals is to deliver two trains per hour serving Hanborough station, strengthening its role as a crucial transport hub for West Oxfordshire.

Cllr Liam Walker, County Councillor for Hanborough and Hailey, has welcomed the launch of the consultation: "This has been a long campaign to secure the much-needed improvements to the Cotswold Line, and I am delighted to see this ambitious plan being put forward. Hanborough station is already one of the key stations in West Oxfordshire, and the commitment to deliver two trains per hour will make a huge difference for local residents, businesses, and visitors. It is vital that West Oxfordshire has a reliable and sustainable transport hub, and I fully support the OxRail2024 Plan for Rail.”

Cllr Walker also highlighted the importance of focusing investment where it can deliver real results: “There has been much talk about building a light railway to Witney and Carterton. Whilst this might sound attractive on paper, we know such a scheme could cost up to £1 billion. That is simply not realistic. What we need is to focus on improving the infrastructure we already have, and I applaud the County Council for not being distracted by fantasy projects. The OxRail2024 Plan for Rail is about delivering practical improvements that will benefit communities right now.”

Residents, businesses, and community groups are encouraged to share their views on the plan during the consultation period. Feedback will help shape the final strategy and ensure it reflects the needs of Oxfordshire’s growing population.

The OxRail2024 consultation is open now and can be accessed via the Oxfordshire County Council website: www.letstalk.oxfordshire.gov.uk/oxrail-2040
