Conservative candidate and local resident Tom Cripps has been elected to Carterton Town Council after securing 47% of the vote in the Carterton Town Council by-election held on Thursday 23rd July 2026.
The result follows a campaign focused on local issues, including protecting residents from the Liberal Democrat-backed School Streets scheme, improving local facilities, supporting motorists, and ensuring Carterton residents have a stronger voice in decisions affecting their community.
Following his election, Cllr Tom Cripps said: I am incredibly honoured that residents have placed their trust in me to represent them on Carterton Town Council. I'd like to thank everyone who voted for me, supported the campaign, and took the time to speak with me on the doorstep.
"Throughout this campaign I listened to residents who want practical solutions to local issues and a councillor who will stand up for Carterton. I promised to work hard, listen, and deliver, and that's exactly what I intend to do from day one. This result sends a clear message that local people want their voices heard. I look forward to working with fellow councillors, community groups and residents to make Carterton an even better place to live."
Leader of the Conservative Group at Oxfordshire County Council, Cllr Liam Walker, welcomed the result and said: Congratulations to Tom on a well-deserved victory. This was a campaign built around local issues that matter to residents, and people have spoken clearly.
One issue came up time and time again on the doorstep – the Liberal Democrat School Streets scheme. This result shows that many residents do not support this draconian proposal, which is a completely over-the-top reaction to concerns around school traffic.
Before Oxfordshire County Council starts installing ANPR cameras on residential roads, it should properly consider other options that have the support of schools, residents and the wider community. We remain committed to working with local people to find sensible, proportionate solutions rather than imposing measures from County Hall."
The Conservatives said they will continue working alongside local residents to campaign for common-sense transport policies, better local facilities and investment in Carterton, while ensuring that the voices of local people remain at the heart of decision-making.
The full result was:
- Tom Cripps (Local Conservatives) – 155 votes (47%)
- Darren Marshall (Reform UK) – 109 votes
- David Wesson (Labour Party) – 62 votes
