Testing crucial in our fight back

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has been giving the daily Downing Street press conference to update the nation on the Government's continued response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

Matt Hancock has announced the restoration of fertility treatments across the NHS. This is fantastic news for many people wishing to start a family.

At the start of April, Matt Hancock set the audacious goal of being able to carry out at least 100,000 Coronavirus tests by the end of the month. Yesterday - on the last day of April - tests hit exactly 122,347, surpassing the Government's own target. This is a monumental achievement and one which the country's testing team can be very proud of.

This has been achieved through a new network of testing centres, home testing kits and a fleet of mobile testing centres. The Government have also more than doubled the number of NHS labs available to analyse the results of tests. Testing is crucial in our fight back against this virus.

We still face huge challenges, but this is a real milestone in our response.

Tracking and tracing is also crucial in defeating this virus - we're getting better and bolder every single day and this will form the basis for how we eventually exit lockdown safely.

We want to return freedom to everyone in this country - freedom from the virus and freedom in our daily lives.
